Hey there 👋🏾 This week was a battle of the robots playing out in real time. Between GPT-4o and Google's Gemini — AI is all anyone in tech can talk about. This tech is supposed to transform our lives, and after watching the demos and playing around with it, I can confirm that it's quite advanced. The promised use cases are even more fascinating — having a more sophisticated translator with me as I travel would be a dream. However, as I watch AI tools develop rapidly, I'm seeing an equal amount of opinions about the place of "human-led creativity" in all of this. Well, to that, I paraphrase Kirsti's latest for the blog (and the centerpiece of today's newsletter). AI will not eliminate the human creativity required for engaging content. Kirsti's testing saga continues — this time with video tools powered by AI. Here's a look at some of the best of the lot: |
- CapCut: Unlike most of the other tools on this list, CapCut is not an AI video editor — it's a video editor with AI capabilities. CapCut has an incredible array of AI features, many of which are free. These include auto-captions, script generation from prompts, short promo clip creation, AI avatars, and more.
- Descript is a brilliant AI video editor that allows you to edit clips based on transcription, making it ideal for podcasters. It includes features like removing retakes, generating chapters, and finding good clips. Its filler word removal feature is particularly impressive.
- Runway can generate videos and animations from text prompts, bring still images to life, generate lip-syncing avatars, and more. It can replace backgrounds, remove items from footage, and blur faces. However, it has a steep learning curve and requires patience.
- Lumen5 converts blog posts, voice-overs, or clips into professional-looking videos. It generates scripts for social videos and creates animated, slide-show-style footage with customizable branding templates.
- Synthesia offers over 70 avatars and 120 voices to choose from. Users can create a personal avatar, though the process is detailed and takes up to 10 days. Synthesia is ideal for professional videos like training videos or product tutorials.
- Wondershare Filmora is a user-friendly alternative to more intense video editing tools. It includes AI features like AI CoPilot, text-based editing, and AI text-to-video. Filmora is more professional than CapCut and offers a free plan with limited features.
- InVideo AI allows users to create entire videos from prompts, using templates and workflows for different platforms. It generates a starting point video from a script, though it requires some fine-tuning. InVideo doesn't offer avatars but provides a voice-over set to stock photos and videos.
