👋 Hey folks, I'm back from vacation and excited to get back into the swing of things with this week's newsletter. I had a wonderful time unplugging and sitting with my thoughts, to the point I almost feel like a blank slate. Beyond catching up with work, I've spent the past few days thinking about content — both personally and in the work I do at Buffer. What surprised me most was realising that I've been spending too much time creating content without making space to synthesize new ideas. This break forced me to slow down and let my thoughts percolate without having to do anything with them. And, ironically, I feel like my instincts for what makes good content have been sharpened by spending time only on absorbing new things. Creating and consuming are a balancing act, and you need both to stay curious and grounded. You also need space for neither — the moments where you're just moving through the world, taking things in. For me, that looked like walks, museums, pretty places recommended on TikTok, and stretches of time where I wasn't thinking about content at all. It helped reset my brain in a way I didn't realise I needed. Kirsti shares deeper thoughts on this concept beautifully in her recent article about creation mode vs. consumption mode, which you'll read all about in today's deep dive. Finally, a quick heads-up: there won't be a newsletter next week, so you'll have one less email in the flurry of Black Friday messages. See you in two weeks! P.S. If you're looking to grow as a video creator, we're running a fun 1-week sprint challenge starting Nov 17th in our Discord community! |

Creation vs Consumption Mode: How to Stay Consistent as a Creator |
If you've ever opened Instagram "just to grab an audio" and woken up two hours later inside your Explore Page, you're not alone. One of the biggest challenges creators face isn't a lack of ideas — it's the constant tug-of-war between creating and consuming. In her latest article, Buffer's Senior Content Writer Kirsti Lang breaks down the simple mindset shift that has helped her stay consistent, avoid distraction spirals, and actually finish the posts she sits down to create. Here's the heart of it: split your creative life into two distinct modes — creation mode and consumption mode — and never mix them. Here's the quick rundown: |
- Creation mode is focused, output-driven work: Writing captions, scripting videos, filming, editing, scheduling, and replying to comments. This work directly grows your audience.
- Consumption mode is intentional research: Scrolling for inspiration, studying trends, and engaging with other creators' content — valuable, but only when done on purpose.
- Keeping them separate is the entire unlock: Blending the two almost guarantees distraction. Treating them as separate tasks with separate tools keeps you on track and cuts down the guilt.
- Use tools that keep you out of the apps: Kirsti leans on Buffer, Notion, and CapCut so she can ideate, write, schedule, and engage without opening TikTok or Instagram. With Buffer's Community feature, she can even reply to comments across platforms in one place — no feed tugging her in.
- Intentional scrolling beats endless scrolling: If she goes into consumption mode, there's a purpose (find audio, study formats) and a timer. No more "accidental" two-hour scrolls.
|
Separating creation from consumption has real, measurable effects. Kirsti found that she finishes more drafts, posts more consistently, feels less guilty about scrolling, and replies to far more comments (which, based on our latest data, meaningfully boosts engagement across platforms). Consistency isn't just about discipline. It's about designing an environment where your focus can survive. Want the full breakdown, including Kirsti's exact workflow and tool stack? |
