A UK teen social ban is back on the cards (and the US isn’t happy)
|
|
|
Why are countries around the world rushing to ban social media for under-16s? |
Perhaps because it’s an easy political win in a world of difficult choices, and the only people who will really get upset are too young to vote…? 🤔 |
So it should be no surprise that a teen social ban is back on the cards in the UK, where the idea had been downplayed for a few months. |
With an uproar about cuts to defence spending, the far-right (endorsed by the world’s first trillionaire) stoking violence at any opportunity, and a leadership challenge brewing, Keir Starmer needs that easy win. |
Politico reports that a policies are being rushed through to get announced on Monday: |
“UK ministers will announce a ban on under-16s accessing certain social media platforms as well as livestreaming, disappearing messages, and functionalities that allow communication with adult strangers” |
Oh, and… “Social media curfews for 16 and 17 year-olds could also be implemented but this is still to be confirmed”. |
If this all proves to be true, expect the lobbying machine to go into overdrive on both sides. Social media companies will seek to have their platforms exempted from the rules, and child safety campaigners will push for maximum restrictions. |
But in his rush for a win, and a big policy to have to his name if he is replaced soon, Starmer might unleash some unintended consequences. |
This week he gave Apple and Google three months to block explicit images on children’s phones. Messaging app company Signal has already spoken out about how the move won’t protect children and might drive the app to be withdrawn from the UK market. |
Meanwhile, a social media ban would enrage the White House, which has already warned the UK not to place too much of a burden on US tech companies. |
And as we’ve seen in Australia, kids find a way around these bans. Just like teenagers smoking behind the bike sheds at school, they’ll still be social online somehow. Will they be more safe just because it’s illegal? |
So Starmer might get a few cheers from parents and a smattering of good headlines, but he might not make a huge impact on child safety… all while upsetting everyone from a 13-year-old in Washington, North East England, to a President in Washington, DC. |
